Welcome to Folklore: Cult • Art • Illustration
Hello, my name is Stephen Harper and I’m a Dark-Folk underground artist, specialising in otherworldly, surreal character based illustrations inspired by myths, movies, pop-culture & horror.
As well as being a published illustrator I’m also the author of the Dark-Poetry book ‘Autumn: The Melancholy & Mental Health’.
“I’m interested in artists who create not to receive attention, but to relieve tension. Stephen Harper is such an artist. His dimly flickering illustrations, the unflinching honesty of his eye and pen. Stephen is of the great tradition of horror. I find catharsis in his work. I commend his mind to yours”. – Bill Oberst Jr (Three From Hell, Lifechanger)
“Stephen’s art is amazing. His illustrations capture an essence with his intelligence and humour shining through everything he creates”. – Maria Olsen (Starry Eyes, The Lords of Salem)
As a massive film and horror fan I’ve contributed reviews, interviews and artwork to numerous websites and magazines such as Popcorn Horror, The Slaughtered Bird, Attack From Planet B, Video Views, Tom Holland’s Terror Time, Creators Unite Magazine, Frisson Comics and Popcorn Horror magazine.
I’ve traded at various conventions and festivals throughout the UK such as: DeadCon, HorrorCon UK, Blackpool Comic Con, Stoke Con Trent and The Liverpool Horrorfest.
My work has been published for various horror magazines, novels and fanzines, such as; ‘Popcorn Horror’, ‘Appalling Stories: 13 stories of social injustice’, Fresh Catch’, ‘Belly of Provence’ & ‘Dammaged Comics’.
As well as constantly working on new artwork, I’ve numerous exciting projects in the works such as a short film, live production and a poetry collaboration.
